Writing Competition

2016 ABC CLARION WRITING COMPETITION

ABOUT

ABC Clarion's writing competition is designed for student writers to put their creativity and skill to the test.

There are 3 categories, with winners and monetary prizes for each. The judges consist of experienced

professionals. ABC Clarion is a student-run newspaper published in the Global Chinese Times. To learn

CATEGORIES

1. Essay
2. Narrative
3. Poetry

THE ESSAY TOPIC:

Describe a time when you experienced failure. How did the experience affect you?

RULES:

● Length limit: 500 words
● Essays must be non-fictional, including creative nonfiction, memoirs, etc.

THE NARRATIVE PROMPT:

Vincent van Gogh once said, "The only time I feel alive is when I'm painting." Write a narrative about someone engaged in an activity that makes him/her feel alive.

RULES:

● Length limit: 750 words
● We will accept a 750-word excerpt—a chapter, for example—from a longer work of fiction as long as the excerpt relates to the prompt.

POETRY TOPIC:

​Inspiration

RULES:

● Length limit: 1 page
● Any form/style of poetry is allowed. Feel free to get as experimental as you like! Impress us!

RULES

● The competition is open to students currently enrolled in grades 8 through 12. Each student is allowed ONE ENTRY per category.

● Submit to clarionabc@gmail.com with each attached entry as a Word Document; title your email "ABC Clarion Competition___(NAME)"; indicate the category, your name, address, grade, school, and email. ​

Submission Deadline: 7/31/16
Judges’ Decision: 8/31/16
