New Culture Class!!!
Martial Art class offered by Hands of Life Martial Art Academy at UCS
Letter from Sensei Arthur Hearns
Hands of Life Martial Arts will be providing a quality program that focuses on and teaches character-building life skills such as confidence, focus, discipline, respect and self-control. The fundamental principles of Okinawan Karate and Chinese Kung Fu infuse these skills through active lessons in the martial arts. As part of the class the students will learn basic self-defense and life protection techniques taught in the Hands of Life Martial Arts curriculum. The students will experience additional dynamic activities such as board breaking and end of the semester belt testing.
The style of martial arts taught at the Hands of Life Martial Arts Academy is called Ryu-Te, which translates to Okinawan Hand. It was founded by Taika Seiyu Oyata.
Originally on Okinawa there was an indigenous art called Ti or Te. This just meant hand. It was understood when someone practiced Ti or Te it referred to the Okinawan self-defense arts. The other art practiced on Okinawa was referred to as To-Te (toe-tay), this meant Chinese hand. To-Te also pronounced kara-te, was the name used to differentiate the self-defense arts from China. The term karate came into use in 1905. The original kanji writing of kara-te could be translated as Chinese hand or empty hand. The modern kanji for karate, changed by the Japanese, can only be read as empty hand.
